Remember to pack a pair of field binoculars as birdwatching around the small village of Kothamangalam can be very rewarding. A short walk or bicycle ride from the Vilas will lead you to a seemingly endless maze of quiet dirt roads, several small dams as well as a slowly meandering river. There are plenty of brightly coloured kingfishers, bee eaters, parakeets, woodpeckers and barbets to be seen. You’ll also spot lapwings, plovers, herons, egrets, storks and, if you’re lucky, the magnificently spotted Asian Koel and the russet winged Lesser Coucal. Best times for viewing are the cool of the morning or late afternoon. The Vilas have a good photographic bird guide in their library.
